Frequently Asked Questions of our Administration

Here at Glenforest we are often asked …

Q.  What are the school hours?

A.  The first bell for homeroom is at 8 am.  Students are to report directly to their assigned homeroom at this time.  Any student not in their homeroom by the late bell at 8:03 will be considered tardy. Any student who arrives after 8:03 am must report to the front desk to sign in and get a tardy pass before they may report to homeroom.  Any student who does not come to homeroom at all will be considered absent.  The school day ends at 3:10 pm.

Q.  How early can I drop off my child?

A. Morning care begins at 7:30 am.  No child may be dropped off before this time.  Any student dropped off for morning care must report to the cafeteria and may not enter the school until the bell rings at 8 am.

Q.  How late can my child stay at the school?

A.  Aftercare begins at 3:30.  Any student not picked up by this time must report to aftercare and parents will be charged for this time.  Students may not wander the school.  Aftercare ends promptly at 6:30 pm.  All students must be picked up no later than 6:30 pm.

Q.  Can I bring lunch to the school for my child?

A.  Yes, any time.  You may drop lunch off for your child at the front desk.  Please make sure your child’s name is on their lunch and Naomi will make sure he/she gets it.

Q.  Can my child go off-campus for lunch?

A.  With written consent from parents (in advance), Seniors may go off-campus for lunch.  Parents must also give written consent for their child to have another student in their car and for their child to ride in a car with another student.

Q.  Why might my child not be able to leave campus for lunch?

A.  If your child is not a senior, they may not leave campus for lunch.  If a senior is late to school (and he/she has driven themselves) they will lose the privilege of leaving campus for that day, or longer, if considered appropriate.  If students are tardy returning from off-campus lunch, they will lose their off-campus privilege for the next school day, or longer, if considered appropriate by Administration.

Q.  If my child has a doctor appointment, what steps do I need to take?

A.  If your child will be late to school because of a doctor appointment, please call Naomi at the front desk and let her know so that she does not mark your child absent.  You must make sure that your child brings a written excuse, from the doctor’s office, when they return to school.  If your child needs to leave school early for a doctor’s appointment, please send in a note to Naomi that includes what time your student must leave campus and whether or not (if known) your child will be returning to school after the appointment.

Q.  What if my child is late and it’s not his/her fault?

A.  If a student is late for school due to no fault of their own, they should call the school and let them know the reason for the delay, such as an accident.  They should come in and explain the situation at the front desk.  Repeated excuses will not be accepted.

Q.  How any tardies/absences can my student have?

A.  A students is allowed 10 cumulative absences in a year-long course and 5 cumulative absences in a semester-long course.  Any further absences must be accompanied by a note from a professional such as a doctor or a dentist.  Unexcused absences, beyond 10 for a year-long course, and 5 for a semester-long course, may lead to loss of academic credit.  If a student must be absent, a written excuse, from a professional, must be brought to the front desk within three days of the absence.  After three consecutive days of unlawful absence or a total of 5 unlawful absences, a student is considered truant.   Unlawful absences include, but are not limited to, 1. Absences of a student without knowledge of his or her parents/guardians 2. Absences of a student without acceptable cause with the knowledge of his or her parents/guardians.  Suspension is not counted as unlawful for truancy purposes.

Q.  When should I keep my child home from school?

A.  If your child shows any of the following, you must keep them home from school.

Fever / Unexplained rashes / Pink eye / Vomiting / Diarrhea / Flu symptoms / Lice

Your child may return to school when they have been fever-free (without medication) for 24 hours.

Q.  How does Fun Friday work?

A.  Throughout the week, the teachers use a point/coin system to reflect behavior of students.  Each class can earn up to 45 points. At the student meeting on Thursdays, the teachers turn in their points for the week.  These points are added together and averaged to come up with the amount of minutes students have for Fun Friday.  If the students as a whole did not behave during the week, they may only get 30 minutes for Fun Friday.  If they were excellent all week with their behavior, they may get the full 45 minutes.  If they do not receive the full amount of minutes, students are required to stay in the auditorium until they are released.  Students may only leave during this time if they have an appointment (and their parent is present or we received advance notice).  Students who drive to school may sign themselves out at the front desk when they are dismissed.  Students will not be allowed to ride/leave early with other students without prior written consent from their parents, no exceptions.  If you will be picking your child up early for Fun Friday, you must come inside and sign them out.  Students who do not drive themselves may not exit the building until their parent/guardian has been seen by staff.  Students who choose to stay for Fun Friday will be able to enjoy different activities on campus.  These activities may change weekly, but there will always be something fun and interesting for them to participate in while on campus until 3:10 pm.
