Admissions FAQ
Can my Child attend Glenforest if he/she has been expelled from another school this year?
Glenforest School is designed for students who are experiencing academic difficulties due to learning challenges such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, Asperger’s Syndrome, or an attention deficit. Our typical student has an average IQ level, but is not experiencing success in his or her school setting due to a learning disability or attention deficit. Our students have not been diagnosed with a behavioral disorder and we do not offer a therapeutic component.
Is Glenforest School for only low functioning students?
The students who attend Glenforest all have an average to above average level I.Q., but do not function well in a large, institutional environment. Their intelligence is not the problem; it is how they process information which requires a smaller classroom with personalized teaching that accommodates the specific learning difference such as ADD or Central Auditory Processing Disorders.
Can a student who graduates from Glenforest School and attend a major college?
Glenforest graduates have attended and graduated from every major college and university in South Carolina. For example, in the last 4 years we have had 3 students accepted into the Citadel. And since 1983, 87 percent of Glenforest’s graduating seniors have been accepted to the university or college of their choice. “This demonstrates why we say Glenforest turns educational challenges into lifetime opportunities,” Dr. Glenda Sternberg Founder / Retired.
What sets Glenforest School apart from public schools?
Our team of teachers, our focused effort to accommodating your child’s learning differences and our intentional communication with the parents to collectively provide a culture that encourages, challenges, and instills an internal desire to learn what amazing knowledge can do for the young heart and mind. We are not a public school that seeks to mainstream a student that sits in the back of a regular classroom only to be pulled out to work with a resource teacher nor would we place them with students with different issues in a self contained class. When students who have a learning difference(s) are made to feel like they don’t fit in at public school, and are required to take notes in a large classroom setting as a teacher would lecture but the student takes poor notes because of the learning difference we know Glenforest can help. Maybe it is the form of tests that are given because did you know not every student can take the same short answer test but Glenforest teachers can help. If your student is struggling with low self-esteem, does not like to read or is seeking to slip through a grade or even two because they truly struggle to read, Glenforest can help. A parent commented to a Glenforest teacher recently “that in twelve years of sharing our story you were his first teacher to realize we were really trying to help the teacher and our student communicate and do well.” If you are trying to keep up appearances with your student’s teachers but your child’s learning style does not fit the current environment then your child will not only think they cannot do the work but will also start to believe that they are a failure. When you choose to send your child to Glenforest you will find the whole school is set up for your child’s success as we all work together to accommodate his or her learning differences.
