Summer Reading Challenges

ATTENTION GLENFOREST COMMUNITY:

This summer there are three summer reading challenges.  Each challenge is detailed on this page.  The first challenge is for all Glenforest students.  The second challenge is for all Glenforest staff.  The third challenge is for all Glenforest parents.

Also, check out our facebook page and post what book you’ll be reading to start your summer reading challenge.

REMEMBER:

Summer break officially starts this Saturday, June 7, 2011.

Glenforest Summer Reading

Student Challenge 2011

(Books must be read or listened to by the student.  Books must be read this summer.  Use the grade you will be a part of next school year.  For example, if you are a rising 6th grader, then you will read 5 fiction or nonfiction books of your choosing.  The books you read need to be on your reading level.  If in doubt, contact

CHALLENGE

Elementary students: read at least 10 chapter or nonfiction or 15 picture books

Middle school students: read at least 5 fiction or nonfiction books

High school students: read at least 4 fiction or nonfiction books

REWARDS

All participants reading at least half the number of books listed above for their grade will receive a McDonald’s coupon.

The student from each group, high school, middle school and elementary school, reading the most books over the summer will be given an Amazon.com gift card.

All participants meeting the challenge and reading the total number listed above will be entered to win the grand prize:  iTunes card.

RULES

Read every day.

Students are to select reading level appropriate books which they believe they will enjoy.

Students may read books in print or digital formats.

High school and middle school students may listen to one of their books for credit.

Elementary students may listen to two of their books for credit.

Books must be reading level appropriate.  If in doubt, email Mrs. Cevallos at  dcevallos@glenforest.org or Mrs. Hoppock at phoppock@glenforest.org

Students are to keep track of the title and author of the books they read and turn in their list at the beginning of school in August 2011.  Lists may be emailed to phoppock@glenforest.org or given to Mrs. Hoppock the first week of school.

Parents must verify their student’s list of books.

Glenforest Summer Reading

Staff Challenge 2011

All books counted for this challenge must be read this summer.

CHALLENGE

All staff members: Read at least 8 fiction or nonfiction books

All staff members: Write at least 1 review of a book you read this summer and post it in your blog, on your webpage or on the school facebook page.

REWARDS

Bragging rights.

The staff member reading the most books this summer will receive a certificate of accomplishment.

The staff member writing the most reviews will receive a certificate of accomplishment.

RULES

Staff are encouraged to read books which are age appropriate for the students they teach.  When doing so, staff must follow the following rules:

picture books:  10 books = 1 book
elementary chapter or nonfiction: 5 books = 1 book
middle school: 2 books = 1
high school: 1 book = 1 book

Parent Challenge 2011

CHALLENGE

All parents: Read every day.  Keep a family reading log.  Each day write down how many minutes each family member spends reading.  Make sure to track when an older child reads to a younger child.

REWARDS

Feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction in knowing you have motivated your child to embrace reading.

Parents reading at least the same number of books as their student this summer will receive a certificate of accomplishment.

The parent reading the most books will receive a certificate of accomplishment.

RULES

Parents may read books in print or digital formats.

Parents may listen to one of their books for credit in this challenge.

Parents are to keep track of the title and author of the books they read and turn in their list at the beginning of school in August 2011.  Lists may be emailed to phoppock@glenforest.org or given to Mrs. Hoppock the first week of school.
