                           Special Education

Special Education by Mrs. Cevallos

Welcome and thank you for considering Glenforest for your child.  Our Special Education overview will highlight a few key ways in which we are growing to better prepare our students.  You will find in every classroom that we are seeking to meet the student with a differentiated  plan that takes into account that students needs, and current academic level.  Our goal here at Glenforest School is to prepare the learner for a very bright future which includes the use of Assistive Technology in content areas such as English, Social Studies, and the like plus our 2011-2012 reading program.

At Glenforest we combine amazing teachers, a diverse history, years of professional training, evidence/research based practices and technology to provide warm and evolving academic environment.  A few other tools we utilize also include the following:

MAP assessment -The results, based on the stability of our data, provide rich insight into learning as it occurs. The implications for instruction and beyond are profound.  Each child learns differently. So we developed computerized adaptive assessments that test differently, allowing teachers to see their students as individuals – each with their own base of knowledge.  Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests present students with engaging, age-appropriate content. As a student responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting up or down in difficulty.  The result is a rewarding experience for the student, and a wealth of detailed information for teachers, parents and administrators. “Renaissance” class (a program of enrichment, enlightenment and fun) where a 30 minute period of time allows students to consider more of their individualized needs.  We want to make sure that each of our students have exactly what they need.

South Carolina State Standards - We follow the South Carolina State Standards to ensure a smooth transition back to public school if needed.  We believe in accountability for each of our students as well as high expectations.  We accommodate and modify the curriculum to ensure we are meeting each of our students’ needs.

About Danielle:

I am originally from NYC, but have lived here for the last 10 years.  My husband and I have two daughters who we recently adopted from Ethiopia.  My undergraduate degree from Columbia International University, is a B.A. in Psychology, and my Masters of Arts In Teaching is from the University of South Carolina.  Prior to working here at Glenforest, I was a Resource teacher in public school for 3 years.  I enjoy working with students who learn differently, and working together with the faculty to ensure that our students get the maximum benefit out of their Glenforest education.  While I am not always in my office, or on campus, I can always be reached via email at dcevallos@glenforest.org!
